About the Royal Commission

The Royal Commission was independent of all Australian governments. Three Royal Commissioners were appointed to inquire into all matters referred to in the terms of reference and make recommendations.

The Commissioners used:

  • submissions,
  • private sessions,
  • hearings; and
  • research

to investigate the issues set out in the terms of reference.

Key dates

  • We began on 8 July 2021
  • Interim Report handed to the Governor General on 11 August 2022
  • Private session applications closed on 28 April 2023
  • Submissions closed on 13 October 2023
  • Ceremonial Closing held on 28 August 2024
  • Final Report handed to the Governor-General 9 September 2024

 

Under the Letters Patent, the Royal Commissioners were required to submit:

  • an interim report by 11 August 2022. This report provided commentary on:
    • summary of work undertaken
    • preliminary observations
    • recommendations about urgent and immediate issues
  • a final report and their recommendations no later than 9 September 2024.

These reports were tabled in the Australian Parliament and are publicly available. They outline the results of the investigation and the Commissioner’s recommendations.
