What is a final report?

A final report is the end product of the work of a Royal Commission. Our Final Report was delivered to the Governor-General on 9 September 2024 and tabled in Federal Parliament the same day.

The Royal Commission has now finished its inquiries and it is up to the Government to consider the next steps.

What is in the Final Report?

The Final Report includes the Royal Commission’s findings and recommendations following its three-year examination of the cultural and systemic issues contributing to Defence and veteran suicide. It provides a blueprint for Government to tackle this national tragedy.

The Final Report is made up of seven volumes:

What are the recommendations?

There are 122 recommendations in the Final Report to drive real, meaningful and long-lasting reform.

The recommendations cover a broad range of topics related to Defence and veteran suicide, including use of data and research by Defence and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, the role and functions of the Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force, military sexual violence, the military justice system, entitlement and claims processing, and a new entity to follow the Royal Commission. Some recommendations are general and others are more specific.

Each recommendation was carefully considered by the Commissioners.

Thank you to everyone who shared their story with the Royal Commission. It is your significant contributions that have made our important work possible.
